The Gondola Maker – by Laura Morelli

“The Gondola Maker” e’ il libro di Laura Morelli che recentemente ho avuto il piacere di leggere. Ovviamente dal titolo si puo’ intuire che non e’ Treviso la citta’ che fa da sfondo alla storia, ma Venezia. Per diverse ragioni sono legata a questa magnifica citta’, quindi quando mi e’ stato chiesto di leggere “The Gondola Maker”, non ci ho pensato due volte. E poi i libri non hanno confini, quindi non voglio limitarmi a consigliare solo quelli di “Treviso”.

“The Gondola Maker” ci fa rivivere la Venezia del XVI secolo attraverso la rabbia, l’amore e le doti di Luca Vianello, figlio di un maestro squeriero (costruttore di gondole). A causa di un incidente fortuito scaturito dalla rabbia del giovane nei confronti del padre, il destino riserva a Luca un futuro piu’ incerto, rispetto al percorso gia’ segnato di portare avanti l’attivita’ dello squero (luogo in cui si costruiscono le gondole) di famiglia. Dovendo abbandonare casa, Luca trova lavoro come gondoliere privato dall’affermato artista Trevisan, tramite il quale conosce la bella patrizia Giuliana Zanchi.

La Venezia che ci descrive la Morelli e’ quella del tardo Rinascimento, un periodo segnato da guerre e dalla peste, ma nonostante cio’ l’arte continua a proliferare. Scorrendo le pagine del libro, ci addentriamo nelle abitudini dei nobili veneziani amanti dell’arte e delle feste nei Palazzi affacciati sul Canal Grande. Tutto cio’ contrapposto alle truci esecuzioni ed allo stato di scarsa igiene che si incontra in certe zone della citta’ lagunare. Mi ha impressionato il grande lavoro svolto da Laura Morelli nella ricerca dei termini del dialetto veneziano per descrivere tutti i componenti e le fasi di ristrutturazione della gondola. E ancor piu’ interessante e’ stata la sua capacita’  di integrare qua e la’ nel testo in inglese espressioni dialettali. Quale modo migliore di scoprire Venezia, se non attraverso il suo passato? Ottima lettura anche per chi non e’ madrelingua inglese.

“The Gondola Maker” is the book written by Laura Morelli I recently had the pleasure of reading. Obviously from the title you can easily understand that is not Treviso the city in the backdrop of the story, but Venice. For various reasons I am linked to this magnificent city, so when I was asked to read “The Gondola Maker,” I did not think twice. And then the books have no boundaries, so do not limit ourselves.

“The Gondola Maker” depicts Venice of the sixteenth century through the anger, love and skills of Luca Vianello, the son of a master squeriero (the gondola maker). Due to a fortuitous accident resulted from the anger of the boy against his father, the fate reserves Luca more uncertain future than the path already predefined to manage the family’s squero (boatyard where the gondolas are built). Having to leave home, Luca finds a job as a private gondolier by the successful artist Trevisan. Thanks to this job he has the chance to meet the beautiful patrician Giuliana Zanchi.

The story is set in the late Renaissance, a period marked by wars and plague, but in spite of this arts continue to proliferate. Browsing through the pages of the book, we are introduced to the habits of the noble Venetians, dedicated to arts and parties in the palaces overlooking the Grand Canal. In contrast with the cruel executions and the poor hygiene that you come across in some areas of the lagoon city. 
I was impressed by the great work done by Laura Morelli in searching of the terms of the Venetian dialect to describe all components and phases of the gondola making. And even more interesting was her ability to integrate here and there into the English text dialectal expressions. What better way to explore Venice, if not from its past? Great book even for those who are not native English speakers.
