Michael Buble’

E’ la storia che ha segnato molti emigranti italiani in tutti gli angoli del mondo. Ines Morotto e Gino Santaga’ agli inizi del XX secolo partono dal piccolo paese di Sambughe’ di Preganziol per cercare lavoro in Canada. La coppia di giovani trevigiani si stabilisce in questa terra lontana riuscendo a mantenere vive le tradizioni, i canti popolari e pure il dialetto veneto di inizio ‘900. Il figlio Demetrio vive immerso nelle tradizioni venete ed e’ lui ad aver supportato, aiutato e spronato il nipotino gia’ in tenera eta’ ad amare quella musica con cui lui crebbe. Michael Buble’ e’ infatti molto legato al nonno Demetrio (Midge), l’idraulico che offriva il suo lavoro in cambio di un’apparizione sui palchi di Vancouver del nipote Michael.

Nel 2006 il nonno Demetrio e lo zio Gino seguono Michael nel suo tour europeo da Parigi a Padova. Una volta arrivati nella citta’ del Santo con il bus del tour si dirigono verso Sambughe’ per vedere il paesello da cui partirono i Santaga’.

Qualche giorno fa tornando da Mestre ho notato quella piccola indicazione verso Sambughe’ cosi’ ho girato l’auto e sono andata a caccia della piccola frazione di Preganziol. Per vedere questo minuscolo groviglio di case, per pensare a come poteva essere stato quel posto 100 anni fa, immaginandomi magari la faccia del nonno Demetrio e di Michael nel vedere, forse per la prima volta, le loro origini.

This is the story that marked the Italian immigration worldwide. Ines Morotto and Gino Santaga’ in the early twentieth century leave the small town of Sambughe’ in Preganziol to look for work in Canada. The young couple settle in this distant land managing to keep their traditions, songs and even the old Venetian dialect alive. Their son Demetrio lives immersed in the Venetian culture and later he supports, helps and encourages his grandson to love the music with which he grew up. Michael Buble’ is in fact very close to his grandfather Demetrio (Midge), the plumber who often offered his service for some stage time for his grandson Michael.

In 2006, his grandfather Demetrio and his uncle Gino join Michael in his European tour. The bus tour take them to Padova and once there, they head off to Sambughe’ to visit the village from where the Santagas come from.

Just the other day on my way back from Mestre, I suddenly noticed the sign towards Sambughe’ at the very last moment. So I turned around  the car and went back looking for the small village of Sambughe’. First to see this tiny tangle of houses, then to think about how it could have been that place 100 years ago. While imagining the face of the grandfather Midge and Michael to see, perhaps for the first time, their origins.
